Breath of fresh air

Posted by AllieB on September 27, 2010

Those who don’t live in ATL wrongly assume that we go from disgusting, humid, suffocating summers straight into bleak, snowless winters, and, while, yes, those are accurate descriptions for those two seasons, the spring and the fall in Atlanta actually happen to be quite glorious.

Finally, after what was definitely the longest, stickiest, most oppressively hot summer that I can remember, fall has arrived…!

Fall Favorites:

  • football (of the Falcon variety)
  • pretty leaves
  • outdoor AWD’s (a perennial favorite, it seems)
  • outdoor yogs (minus the allergies)
  • breaking out non-black items in my wardrobe, as fear of sweating thru clothing has decreased significantly

Seriously, thank you for sharing this, Sister. Monday Mania – you are dismissed.

I really phoned this one in.

Eye on the prize

Posted by AllieB on September 16, 2010

Jennifer Anniston is in Atlanta at this very minute filming her new movie, Wanderlust, with co-starr Paul Rudd.

First of all, I think the movie sounds very intriguing. An excerpt from onlocationvacations says:

In the movie, Jen and Paul play an urban couple who  stop at a rural B&B which turns out to be a commune filled with nudists, pot smoking and orgies. The script has created some buzz of its own because, reportedly, Aniston’s character has sex with a woman in the movie.

Maybe this will break her Rom-Com curse…?

Secondly, and much more importantly, this means she and Paul Rudd are trolling the streets of Buckhead, with sightings reported at Chops, St Regis, Whole Foods…I’ve been to Whole Foods no fewer than four times this week for various reasons, and I’ve seen nada.

I wonder what I’d do if I saw them. Probably something really awkward…I once spent a very brief segment of an evening with Owen Wilson and his entourage (thanks to JTomm), and, as we were all being introduced, I felt the inexplicable need to reach across the table and help myself to a handful of his nachos. He didn’t speak to me after that.

Jennifer and Paul are my chance to redeem myself – I must find them! Anyone want to get an AWD at the St. Regis?

Best in Show: Margs

Posted by AllieB on August 31, 2010

Despite an auspicious beginning to my relationship with margs (El Amigo – which is somehow still open, btw – topped theirs off with a murky liquid that bore a striking resemblance to dishwater), we have grown to have a very companionable existence.

Which means to say: I love a good margarita.

So – where are the best in the city? Well. According to a May 2010 city-wide poll by Citysearch, the favorites are as follows:

  1. Taqueria del Sol
  2. Agave
  3. No Mas Cantina
  4. Zocalo
  5. Caramba Cafe

The AJC food critics say:

  1. Pure Taqueria
  2. Lupe Taqueria ( now closed, so nevermind)
  3. Agave
  4. Noon
  5. Holy Taco

I don’t have strong feelings about either of these lists, but I will say this about Taqueria: they do an excellent marg, but I had a very unpleasant experience back in ’06 wherein the bartender refused to give me my own personal pitcher, saying he had to have two ID’s per order. I offered to show him my ID twice, but he said that wasn’t the same.

I realize this all sounds a tad aggressive, but desperate times, desperate measures…either way, they failed me in my time of need. Were it not for this grudge I refuse to let go of, they’d likely be numero uno. Too bad, Taqueria, tooooo bad:

  1. Treehouse – I’m not kidding – order one the next time you go
  2. Nava – a prickly  pear + that patio = an exceptional post-work activity
  3. La Fonda – they’re always very fresh with just the right amount of tartness
  4. Nuevo Lardeo Cantina – they make the wait endurable, if not enjoyable
  5. Pancho’s – this Buford Highway gem has great ones, and they serve the really thin, light tortilla chips that are reminiscent of Rio Bravo’s (R.I.P. Rio Bravo – you are missed)
  6. HOBNOB – this primely placed spot on Piedmont and Monroe does an awesome Skinny Girl marg – I didn’t want to delve into that whole craze with this entry, but I thought it deserved mention

how good does that look.

I’m outdoorsy in that I like having drinks on patios

Posted by AllieB on July 29, 2010

Having drinks outside is my favorite activity. Of all the activities one can do – for me, it is number one. Thank you, someecards, for recognizing the validity of such an avocation. Having a Hoegaarden (I have an unhealthy affection for this absolutely delicious and excessively caloric beer) whilst sitting on a patio in the company of friends is honestly as good as it gets, IMO.

We live in a city where this is possible for a better part of the year. Even now, in this utterly oppressive, suffocating heat, patio seating is still an option so long as there is appropriate shade and insect repellent.

The q is – where to go??

A screenshot from my beloved spreadsheet...

So – there are some options…also, a sneak-peak of what will be coming soon to Baxter Bark Twice…! In html friendly format, not a ghetto screenshot of an Excel spreadsheet.

Of course, you can always just go sit out back at 5p. Because, as everybody knows, at the end of the day:

“…it turns out not where, but who you’re with that really matters…” -DMB, 1997

I did that just for you, Billy.

This post was inspired by/kind of plagiarizes A’s blog post from today, which I highly recommend reading:
