What’s new, pussycat?

Posted by AllieB on April 28, 2011

As the heavens prepared to open above Metro Atlanta last night, having wreaked real, tragic havoc over Mississippi and Alabama, people around town made appropriate preparations: got the animals inside, made sure they had candles/flashlights, some of us ensured we had plenty of wine and library books…you get the picture: time to hunker down. Refer to the following BBM convo:

Me: Mom, are you going to Body Pump today?

Mom: No, I’m going to a concert at Cobb Energy Center

Me: A concert?! Mom, the weather is supposed to get really bad later!

Mom: Sorry to miss BP!

I thought this turn of events was a bit curious – although my mom does love concerts (Hippie Fest ’07, Rod Stewart & Stevie Nicks), but then forgot about it and carried on with my evening. It wasn’t until hours later when I was chatting with my older sister, CKB, that I learned what was going on. My mother was at the TOM JONES concert. TOM JONES. Tom “Sexbomb” Jones. What? I don’t even know.

Soundbite! J Simps on her “workout regimen” for her upcoming nuptials (PopEater, credit: Julia)

“I just have to work out on my own. There is no regimen I need to follow. There’s no diet I need to follow…No exercise is fun! I am going to dance around my bedroom and hopefully lose some weight — and lift some weights and do what I can!”

Every time Jessica gets the urge to speak, she should resist that urge and not speak. She’s the only person to whom I’d say this, but: try NOT using your words. I goog’ed “Jessica Simpson dancing.” Have I gone too far? This isn’t very nice.

Maybe think about tossing in some pilates along with your boudoir frolics, or going on the occasional yog…just in case.

It’s almost here….my favorite thing: THE ROYAL WEDDING!!!! Kate’s getting hitched! I set my alarm for 4:01. If I can’t stay awake for it, at least I will be absorbing the coverage as I sleep…omg I seriously can’t wait. I’m afraid I’m not going to be doing any live-blogging, 1. because the chances of me staying awake are very slim, and 2. I don’t know how to live blog. Rest assured, I’ll have plenty to say after the fact tomorrow afternoon, so….BOLO.

Pucker up for Flavor Flav

Posted by AllieB on March 16, 2011

Today is Flavor Flav’s birthday (he’s 52?!), and also Lips Appreciation Day. Per the oh-so-trustworthy internet source, holidaypedia.com:

You’ve spent a fortune on your teeth and now it’s time to do something good for your lips. And today’s the day. And lets not forget kissing is always a great way to celebrate your lips!

Er, awk. And none of that matters anyway because the most important thing about today, March 16, is that it is my favorite* sister’s birthday!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHAR!

Charlotte is the best big sis in the whole wide world because she always looks after me, we always have fun, we laugh a LOT, and we have the same arms. I hope you have the best day ever, Sistie!

*Jordan, when it is your birthday you can be my favorite.

If I had a million dollars…

Posted by AllieB on November 29, 2010

First, I’m so glad that the days of the Barenaked Ladies are days of yore.

Second, by “a million dollars” I mean “a hundred dollars” and, as it were, I do! I spent Saturday evening in Newnan, The City of Homes – or, according to Skin, The City of Magic (?) – and it was lovely. In addition to the company, setting, and food, the evening was made even better by the truly unprecedented event of me winning a raffle/bet/pool situation when I happened to have chosen the right square in a grid of 100, winning me one hundred dollars…a C-Note…a Benjamin…etc.

An extra $100 is also an extremely uncommon happening in my life, and I’ve been deciding what to do with this unexpected windfall…I have several arrears that need to be relieved, but that’s no fun and is what normal payday is for, so no – and same goes for savings. I’m going to buy something fun for moi:

The Short List:

  1. Christmas tree for my casa – this is a definite
  2. A wreath – also a non-option
  3. Lights for decorating tree and windows – thanks for sharing, Mom and Dad (read: free)
  4. Christmas presents
  5. I’m pretty sure I’ve run out of money…

Sigh. $100 really doesn’t go all that far, does it? No, it does not.

In addition to this excitement, I did three things this past weekend that I would highly recommend.

  • I saw Harry Potter and found it to be the best one yet; I cannot wait for the second installment. Dobby….!!!!
  • Enjoyed lunch at Horseradish Grill. The Baxter Fam has been enjoying meals there since before it was even there – it used to be The Red Barn Inn. It was a red barn that served steak. Anyway, we’ve continued our faithful patronage through the years and it’s one of my favorite spots. Lunch on Friday was no exception. I ordered the Turkey Club on HF sourdough with a side of grits, but I was having extreme order anxiety about all the things that I wasn’t getting to have, so I encouraged to Jordan to get onion rings, Stanton got the She-Crab Soup, and I assembled a delicious and rather substantial doggy-bag using everyone’s leftovers: shrimp and grits, mac n cheese…so, at the end of the day, I wound up with a nice sampling of the whole menu. Mission: accomplished.
  • The Dali Exhibit at the High. Go, but don’t go on the Friday following a major national holiday when most people do not work and are trying to think of ways to entertain their out of town visitors. The body odor, frankly, is what I remember most about the experience. I think my favorite part was holing up in the gift shop with a book entitled Paintings That Changed the World. I am, after all, an art historian…the exhibit itself was expansive and provided a very comprehensive look at the life and art of Dali – I hope to return on a less crowded, less pungent day.

Merry Mehday!

Turkey Dizzle

Posted by AllieB on November 23, 2010

I think I’m pretty much maxed out in the arena of giving thanks – at least re: the blogosphere, so instead of going on and on about perspective and how lucky we are and blah blah, I’m going to talk about something else.

Let’s see…

After much research and consideration about what to contribute to the Baxter Fam T-Giving feast, I’ve decided to stick to the age-old adage KISS and will be serving the following hors d’oeuvre. It’s beyond delicious (credit: Paula Deen by way of Boss Lady) and so super healthy….

Sugar and Nut Glazed Brie

Ingredients

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup chopped macadamia nuts or pecans

1 tablespoon brandy

1 (14-ounce) round brie

Apple wedges, for serving

Pear wedges, for serving

2 to 3 tablespoons lemon juice

Crackers, for serving

Directions

In a small bowl stir together the sugar, nuts, and brandy. Cover and chill for at least 24 hours or up to 1 week.

Preheat oven to 500 degrees F.

Place the brie on an ovenproof platter or pie plate. Bake for 4 or 5 minutes or until the brie is slightly softened. Spread the sugar mixture in an even layer on top of the warm brie and bake for 2 to 3 minutes longer, or until the sugar melts. Brush the fruit wedges with lemon juice and arrange them around 1 side of the brie. Place crackers around the other side.

I feel confident I can handle this. Two years ago I managed to ruin microwave green beans, and last year I spent approximately five hours slaving over a dish that was allegedly “easy” and only took “30 mins prep time.” Psssh. Holy crap that looks really tasty.

For how much I go on about it in real life, I feel I don’t give Trader Joe’s enough credit on this thing. From the wine to the produce to the veggie chips to the AMAZING Parmesan Pastry Puffs, there is nothing I don’t love about TJ’s. Last night I made my thrice-weekly sojourn to my local market, and I would just like to say thank you to the gentleman who checked me out: “Alexandra,” he said, as he looked at my I.D., “you’re doing okay for yourself – you still look like you’re about 17.” It may or may not have had something to do with my message tee and side-pony braid, but whatevs – I’ll take what I can get. (Note: PEARL! Sorry I’m not sorry.)

ha. hahaha.

(Not So) Terrible Tuesday

Posted by AllieB on November 16, 2010

Meet & Greet: Optimistic Allie*. She’s usually around, and if she’s not she’ll be back soon. Case in point: it’s raining, it’s cold, and it’s Tuesday (newsflash: I don’t prefer Tuesdays)  yet here I am, warm and cozy in my office, day dreaming about things that I am looking forward to. I know – I amaze even myself. One thing that is helping, admittedly, is the imminent arrival of Papa John’s…

Annnyway, there’s lots coming up to look forward to – holiday parties, holiday food, holiday guests, holiday decor, holiday songs….! I share with you a few other things worthy of note that have bolstered my spirits. I’m telling you – there’s never not light at the end of the tunnel…even if that tunnel is Tuesday.

Numero Uno: Girl Talk! Friday, January 21, 2011 at The Tabernacle. GT was last in ATL back in Nov 2k08, we had a really awesome time, and that was on a Thursday – just think of the times we will have on a Friday…plus, the new album dropped yesterday, and it’s awesome – based on the snippets I’ve heard. I will download in full this egning.

Numero Dos: my family reunites for T-giving and Christmas…! It’s a triumphant return for Jordan, U of R’s reigning Homecoming Queen, and Charlotte, dominator of the Miami Half-IronMan Triathlon, and for Missy, Labrador puppy age 11 years (waaah!) going on 2.

Numero Tres: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I, premiers this Friday, November 19. The previews look awesome, and despite the fact that the reviews are not, I can’t wait to see it.

Numero Cuatro: A Serve Reunion in NYC….? Stay tuned.

Numero Cinco:  Supper Club, pay day, A & K’s Holiday Hoop-la…

(I’d like to mention that, since I started writing this, the sun has come out. This could be a coincidence, but I’m guessing not.)

Bonus Numero Seis: Tripod puppies unite!! Filmed at Casa di Dabs – LL – Leila, this is really freaking adorable…your heart might burst.

*in light of my rather aggressive tirade on Jessica Simpson yesterday, I thought I’d better take it down a notch. I’d say this is a significant, not to mention admirable, attitude adjustment…but sometimes it’s nice to also to think about things you’re looking forward to – kinda like the whole thing about listing things you’re thankful for…ok, this is pretty redundant. Whatevs.
