Bright Lights, Big City

Posted by AllieB on December 20, 2010

This past weekend I visited my nearest and dearest, Pal “Meat Cleve” Cleveland, in NYC with my other nearest and dearest, Billy Bel. We had hoped to round out our SATC-esque adventure with our fabulous fourth, Sister Pantalones, but due to factors beyond her control she was unable to hop a bird and join us. She was missed.*

There’s nothing like NYC at Christmas! I didn’t even feel embarrassed taking photo after photo of the tree at 30 Rock, or stopping in the middle of very busy crosswalks to get a shot of the Chrysler Building. As you can tell in the latter photo, there was a good bit of jostling going on around me – apparently others did have a problem with my unabashed tourism.

Anyway, we really had the best time, and we had really, REALLY good meals. I had the best pizza I have ever had, ever, at Vezzo in Murray Hill. I didn’t take a photo of it because we were already a subject of ridicule amongst the staff in that they tried to deter us from sitting by giving us padded wait times and saying crap like, “eeeesh, I don’t know, the way things are looking now…it doesn’t look good for you…like at all – you could be waiting for, WOW, I don’t even know how long…”

Thanks, jerk, we’ll just hop next door to the creepy Italian joint decorated solely in Virgin Marys with unforgiving neon lighting and enjoy a $5 glass of house chianti whilst we wait out your alleged “wait.”

It actually did take over an hour, but it was worth it. So worth it that I am glorifying our experience there in spite of the utter rudeness with which we were treated – that’s how big a person I am/how incredible this pizza was.

In addition to tourist activities and food comas, we enjoyed Pal’s neighborhood, a near-death experience in a terrifying cab ride, channeling our inner Goth, and a whole lot of mashing. I would like to comment on how much I appreciate the institution that is brunch in NYC - Hollandaise sauce is my very favorite condiment, and the ginger pomegranate mimosa(s) I tried on Saturday were amazing AND good for my health. ‘Twas a glorious time.

We also took the ferry over to Ellis Island and saw The Statue of Liberty….she’s never looked better.

* I mean that sincerely, without any irony.**

stride, stride, stride…EXECUTE

Posted by AllieB on October 27, 2010

This commercial cracks me up. Sidebar: I’m thisclose to caving and springing for DVR – I’m sick of missing my programs. I can only talk on the phone during commercials; I have to time my workouts and showers precisely, as well as any food preparation…plus, Leila Ann talks a LOT and even when we watch episodes 2-3 times, I still miss at least half of what went on – I must have access to these things in the comfort of my own home. I’m pretty sure I can justify the $15/month…yup, I’m calling Comcast right now.

Anyway, I love the expression on this little guy’s face – it’s no eTrade, but it’s still pretty good. You don’t need sound, but it will  certainly enhance your experience as it is a Janis Joplin classic…

Happy Hump Day!

Wednesdays, after Fridays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and the occasional Sunday, are my favorite day of the week. Not only is there excellent television (Modern Family has effectively stymied any kind of sophomore slump), but people start to emerge from their cave dwelling and are willing – eager? – to participate in organized activities, such as….SUPPER CLUB! I’m so proud of us for finally setting dates and sticking to them. I have no idea what is on the menu, but I’m very much looking forward to it. Me, I will be bringing Two Buck Chuck as Wells Fargo has totally screwed me over in this stupid transition from Wachovia (sorry, K – I’m not happy), and I am horribly poor until they get their act together.

Mitchell: She wants us to buy Lily a Blackberry.
Cam: She doesn’t have the dexterity for that! What’s happening!?

My horoscope has just informed me that today is a ME day and, because I have been working very hard all week, I deserve a reward this evening. Who am I to dispute this wisdom. I really do love Wednesdays.

Oh, Hilary. You are soooo hilarious. Ha. Ha. I much prefer Pal’s handiwork to your own.

oh look - it's Baxter and I'm barking twice

Note: I don’t actually have that many chins.

Uninspiring Words for the Uninspired

Posted by AllieB on September 13, 2010

It’s Monday. I’m really tired. I’ve restricted all non-work related interaction to the following words:

Meh. Neat. Blerg.

All three of these are highly effective conversation enders. Give it a try – people leave you alone pretty much immediately, unless you’re talking to Hilary and she will not. She will just ask you more questions until you feel like your head might explode and you have to step away from your computer.

As a nod to the season premier’s of 90210 and Gossip Girl, both of which air TONIGHT, I share with you this mildly entertaining clip. (It wasn’t until I read a post on my own blog that I remembered this exciting bit of news. I feel very appreciative of my blogging efforts because I had totally forgotten they were coming on tonight, and my Monday Mania just decreased tenfold. Thanks, AllieB – consider your horn tooted.  (Tooted. Ha.))

Anyway, this clip is a mash-up of various GG clips from 2008 done in the style of the old-school 90210 credits. The little blonde girl with the big eyes and fresh face who you won’t recognize as a current cast member is Taylor Momsen, which, to use her words, makes me wanna die. She went from Cindy Lou Hoo to JailBait McMegaSlore pretty much overnight. It saddens me…it really does.

Yaaaaaaay Fall TV is back…!

drivin’ and cryin’

Posted by AllieB on September 8, 2010

Time spent in the car is time I allocate for me – it’s AllieTime. I don’t prefer to talk on the phone, and I don’t like to listen to people talking at me (I’ve never been a fan of The Bert Show – blasphemous, I know).

What I do like to do, however, is listen to music and, from time to time, even add my own harmonization. My favorite tunes along with to sing:

  1. Taylor Swift – I’m not particular, any one will do
  2. Breathe (2 am) by Anna Nalik; not especially uplifting –  it’s better for a, shall we say, less happy occasion where perhaps you just need a little release…or something…so I’ve heard…
  3. I think I have to stop making this list because I’m realizing my sing-a-long choices are kind of weird and more than a little embarrassing. Instead I’ll just mention Hilary’s favorite, which is Celine Dion.

Turns out AllieTime is more confidential than I realized. Note to self. Anyway, I would like to share with you this moving rendition of Les Miserables “I Dreamed a Dream” from Glee. This may or may not be on my sing-a-long list.

Meet & Greet: Hilbilly Bel

Posted by AllieB on August 18, 2010

Allow me introduce my sort-of friend,  Billy.

I think this is a very accurate portrayal of her sweetly meek persona

She – yes, it’s a she – likes softball, chino pants, and the Georgia Bulldogs. You can often find her picking up tank tops at Gap Kids, or singing – that’s being generous, it’s really just a cacophonous assault on the eardrums – to “Rich Girl” at your local dive bar.

GAH, fine. This is the real Billy. She is my bestest and we talk every single day. I miss her because we don’t live in the same city anymore. And I say all of this without any irony.

I still think you’re a big ole pile of Heslop.
