Ruminations from a Recluse

Posted by AllieB on January 12, 2011

Five things that are true about yours truly:

  1. I do not prefer icy weather
  2. I can sleep a LOT
  3. I’m pretty creative in the kitchen
  4. I’m a really good dancer
  5. Not so much with the singing

I laughed at all those people stocking up on bottled water and such at the grocery store Saturday and Sunday. Look who’s laughing now – it’s certainly not me. Anyway, I’ve had a lot of time to do nothing in the last couple of days, and allow me to share with you my new knowledge.

To those of you with Showtime, you MUST MUST MUST watch the new show, Shameless, which premiered on Sunday night. By the end of it, my jaw was literally hanging open in shock and awe – in a good way. It’s about a highly dysfunctional family in Chicago – five kids, an alcoholic father, and their convoluted lives which are instantly engaging and fascinating. It stars William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum (of whom I have not fond memories from the scariest movie of all time, Poseidon, which is about rogue waves in the North Atlantic that are basically tsunamis in the middle of the ocean), and, my favorite, Steve Howey, who was Van on Reba. The show is racy, it’s smart, its moral compass is all over the map…in essence, it’s quality TV.

With an interesting selection of food in pantry/fridge, I’ve had to get a little creative. Last night I made a simple yet delicious (and not the least bit healthy) meal of pasta with eggs for dinner. It sounds kind of redundant, but it was really, really good. The recipe describes it as the ultimate comfort food, and I’m inclined to agree. I can’t quite explain it – it doesn’t just taste like pasta with eggs, somehow the flavors merge and it is a happy time for your taste buds and tumster.

Avril and Britney both have new singles out. Avril’s What the Hell is a guilty pleasure that gets shrill after awhile; Britney’s Hold It Against Me is an electronic number that sounds like it’s already been re-mixed for da club. However, I’ve had a few dance parties to both tunes, and they each provide more than adequate beats for that.

Meet & Greet: Max. I’m staying with Max at his house this week while his parents are in Cabo. CABO. He and I feel the same way about icy weather. We’ve been challenging each other to sleep-a-thons, and it’s unclear as of yet who’s the winner…we’ve both logged in some serious zzzz’s.

Oh, really HOTlanta? Really?

Troubleshooting: Lindsay Lohan

Posted by AllieB on December 7, 2010

Suffice it to say, Lindsay Lohan has not had the best 2k10 ever. She’s been safely tucked away in rehab since October (give or take) and is mandated to stay until 2011, but then she’s on her own again…which means to say, it’s only a matter of time before she’s back in the slamma/going on benders/wearing tights as pants, etc.

Solution! Dancing with the Stars. I can take no credit for this – the People with Kate Middleton (love you Kate!) on the cover had a blurb with their suggestions for the next DWTS group, and they chose Lindsay. But, like, DUH – it’s perfect for her! Despite her best efforts to alienate her fans, I think America is still rooting for LiLo and wants her to succeed. Ergo, they will vote for her and she will do well and all will be right in the world again…so long as she doesn’t paint expletives on her finger nails, dance a routine sans underroos, or pass out backstage.

what not to do

See – I’ve got all the answers figured out. I wonder if Lindsay still has an agent? If not, Linds, I’m at work til 530 then reachable on my cell; let’s talk shop.

The Reebok Easytone commercials – the ones with the cute little rumps just shaking back and forth while that maddening song plays – are finally getting to me and I might need to spring for a pair of those toning pants. Is that embarrassing? I’m such a sucker for advertising/airbrushing. Good grief, those things are $80!! I’ll stick with my old school Nike tights and lunges, thankyouverymuch. Orrrr, maybe I’ll add to Christmas List….

(Not So) Terrible Tuesday

Posted by AllieB on November 16, 2010

Meet & Greet: Optimistic Allie*. She’s usually around, and if she’s not she’ll be back soon. Case in point: it’s raining, it’s cold, and it’s Tuesday (newsflash: I don’t prefer Tuesdays)  yet here I am, warm and cozy in my office, day dreaming about things that I am looking forward to. I know – I amaze even myself. One thing that is helping, admittedly, is the imminent arrival of Papa John’s…

Annnyway, there’s lots coming up to look forward to – holiday parties, holiday food, holiday guests, holiday decor, holiday songs….! I share with you a few other things worthy of note that have bolstered my spirits. I’m telling you – there’s never not light at the end of the tunnel…even if that tunnel is Tuesday.

Numero Uno: Girl Talk! Friday, January 21, 2011 at The Tabernacle. GT was last in ATL back in Nov 2k08, we had a really awesome time, and that was on a Thursday – just think of the times we will have on a Friday…plus, the new album dropped yesterday, and it’s awesome – based on the snippets I’ve heard. I will download in full this egning.

Numero Dos: my family reunites for T-giving and Christmas…! It’s a triumphant return for Jordan, U of R’s reigning Homecoming Queen, and Charlotte, dominator of the Miami Half-IronMan Triathlon, and for Missy, Labrador puppy age 11 years (waaah!) going on 2.

Numero Tres: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I, premiers this Friday, November 19. The previews look awesome, and despite the fact that the reviews are not, I can’t wait to see it.

Numero Cuatro: A Serve Reunion in NYC….? Stay tuned.

Numero Cinco:  Supper Club, pay day, A & K’s Holiday Hoop-la…

(I’d like to mention that, since I started writing this, the sun has come out. This could be a coincidence, but I’m guessing not.)

Bonus Numero Seis: Tripod puppies unite!! Filmed at Casa di Dabs – LL – Leila, this is really freaking adorable…your heart might burst.

*in light of my rather aggressive tirade on Jessica Simpson yesterday, I thought I’d better take it down a notch. I’d say this is a significant, not to mention admirable, attitude adjustment…but sometimes it’s nice to also to think about things you’re looking forward to – kinda like the whole thing about listing things you’re thankful for…ok, this is pretty redundant. Whatevs.

Dear Jessica

Posted by AllieB on September 14, 2010

I’m worried about you. I’ve heard that you’re actually quite teeny in person, and I’m sure you are, but most people aren’t seeing you in person – they’re seeing you in US Weekly and People and on Tyler Durden, and these photos – they aren’t good.

Honestly, I’m not sure you even have all that much weight to lose – the problem is more that you insist upon dressing as though you’re actively seeking out ridicule. It seems that, these days, every time you leave the house it’s an egregious fashion fail. You’re cute! You have nice hair! Many people seem to find your ditziness endearing! You once had, like, the best body ever! You can doooooooo this!

Can we not:

Let’s revisit a time when things like this were happening:

a compilation by People from 2007 - these aren't necessarily my favorite looks, but you get the jist

In spite of your bevy of recent blunders, I am nevertheless optimistic. Just get a stylist and go for a couple of 3 mile yogs/week. Not unlike Lindsay Lohan, I think there is hope for you yet. And I’m sorry for comparing you to Lindsay Lohan just now – that may have been a bit harsh.

Your Friend – AllieB

P.S. Also, maybe stop talking about your poor hygiene while you’re on the talk show circuit – you’re not doing yourself any favors.
