Victory! Fail.

Posted by AllieB on May 23, 2011

To preface: this week is an atypical week. I am wrapping up my job and concurrently transitioning to my new one; this is a very exciting change, I feel like I’m practically a grown-up…..anyway, be advised – BBT might suffer as a result – not forever, just for the next few days.

I’ll tell you who else is suffering: me, looking at Misha Barton.

(people.com by way of CCH)

Fail, indeed. Although I do approve of her reading material – Bill Bryson is a very hilarious author. Start with I’m a Stranger Here Myself – it’s a compilation of articles he wrote about various idiosyncrasies that make America so awesome. For instance, the number of people who die every year in mattress related deaths, or the wonder that is the grocery store. Whatever, he’s funny – BBT highly recommends. I bet Mischa is just carrying it around for show – it’s upside down for pete’s sake.

The new Bachelorette started last night. Pass.

Oprah’s last show is Wednesday. I thought that already happened?

Beyonce did her crazy, legs-flail-about-as-though-independent-from-her-body dance moves at the Billboard Awards Sunday. Seriously – how. B Spears also performed, to some decidedly lackluster reviews…but at least she looked good.

Here is Tex’s Tacos schedule for the week. I heart Tex’s Tacos. This is me having the all new carne asada taco – they upped the ante on the carne and it’s the heat. I hadn’t noticed the muy auténtico decor they have in the truck…looks good, boys.

Are you watching Parks and Recreation yet???

The Fifth of May

Posted by AllieB on May 5, 2011

HAPPY CINCO de MAYO!!! Let’s jump right in. Tex’s Tacos, a little food truck I mention from time to time, is having a fiesty fiesta with their neighbors, Kramer’s aka Kramerica aka the bar. I’m not sure if Skinny Girl margs are on the menu, but you can bet yer ass that some tasty tacos will be…Souper Jenny has free sangria…check out this  totally manic website to find out what else is happening in your world tonight.

Good talk. See ya out there.

I often criticize others for their inability to behave, speak, or dress in a sensical manner. Where are their filters? Their scruples? Their MIRRORS??

Hello, pot? This is kettle – you’re black. Case in point: an interview that aired on the WSB 5 o’clock news a couple of years back wherein I discussed savings bonds. I know as much about saving money as Hilary does about shirts that aren’t plaid, so clearly I’m the ideal person to weigh in on smart, practical, safe ways to save chedda and generate decent interest. Here’s the online article – I am ever so grateful that the video is unavailable.

“When I think of savings bonds, I think of old fashioned, old time, not really the best way to save or invest your money,” said Allie Baxter.

CD rates at most banks are around 3 percent. But I-series savings bond are a much better deal…..[blah blah blah money blah blah interest rate etc etc]…..In six months, because of inflation, the interest rate will go to six percent; double what lots of banks offer on traditional CDs.

“Oh, it would make sense to get into that, then,” said Baxter

Oh, would it? I sound borderline uneducated. The interview was filmed at the Fellini’s on Peachtree on a sunny Friday afternoon; I was there enjoying a midday meal with The Original Serve (herro Billy, Pal, Pants, Tina). Although my “friends” definitely egged me on, I never would’ve donated my dignity volunteered had the tv crew not mentioned that it was for Clark Howard’s segment. I’d jump off a bridge for Clark Howard. WWCHD?

I’m having a hard time remembering why it was a good idea to share that story…

Vamanos, muchachos.

I love that piece you’re wearing

Posted by AllieB on May 4, 2011

The Annual Met Gala is one of my favorite nights of the year because of the clothes. Yes, it turns out BBT is not only a female, but she has girly interests – the mind reels. For instance, I love Brooklyn Decker, Gwyneth and Diane Kruger (I always love Diane Kruger and that Joshua Jackson is still a real hunk, IMO):

Gorgeous pieces, all of those.

I’ve just learned the devasting news that Kristen Wiig is retiring two of her SNL characters forever, PERMANENTLY. I saw the headline and was like, “oh no, so long as it’s not Gilly or Penelope…” Obviously, it’s Gilly and Penelope. I’m so sad!!! Actually, Gilly I can do without – I’m not sure I’ve even seen one with Gilly – but I love Penelope. I love people who insist upon one-upping others – they are so easy to make fun of later. I even did a post about Penelope. RIP, Penelope.

I’ve started a new gig! As of today, I am now a “contributor” to Buckhead Patch, an online news resource that is about…Buckhead. For my first post I cheated and posted basically the same entry I wrote about Tex’s Tacos a couple of weeks ago. I made a few changes, but I figured it was a good idea to kind of ease in. Anyway, if you want to read something similar to but not identical to something you’ve likely already read – check it out. OR if you just want to show support to the good, hardworking proprietors of Tex’s, send the link on: Food Truck Phenomenon: Tex’s Tacos.

I can’t remember…. is tomorrow Friday? (credit: Char)

No, but it is Cinco de Mayo…! More on that tomolla. ¡Olé!

Tex’s Tacos: yes, please

Posted by AllieB on April 18, 2011

While they claim they’re not “reinventing the wheel,” Mac Helms and Harrison Jones, owners/chefs of the brand new Tex’s Tacos, have somehow managed to offer a new spin on standard Tex-Mex cuisine – “Nueva Texicana” – and they nailed it. With a “home base” located in the heart of Buckhead next to our nearest and dearest, Kramerica Industries, they are also taking their product mobile – today, for instance, the truck is at the Prominence Building in Buckhead from 11:45 – 2:00.

Tex’s has only been open for a weekend, but the food was superb as was the service. I obviously plan to try everything on the menu, but so far I especially recommend the following:

  • Carne Asada taco – perfectly seasoned and cooked beef with grilled onions, cilantro, guac and queso fresco
  • Al Pastor quesadilla with pork. The Al Pastor is unlike anything I’ve ever had: slow-roasted pork marinated in chillies and pineapple topped with onions, pineapple, fresh cilantro and queso fresco. The cheese was melted to gooey perfection wherein it was more of a glue for the ingredients than an extra ingredient itself. It was seriously awesome.
  • Chips, salsa, and guac: the chips are the amazing kind like Rio Bravo used to have – paper thin and super fresh. (I am seriously having a hard time letting go of Rio Bravo even though it’s been closed for over a decade…maybe Tex’s can help???)

parked outside home base in Buckhead

Mac and Harrison worked on the recipes for months and have pretty much got it figured out… I’m waiting on those cheese fries, fellas. They will frequently offer late night fare on the weekends from their store front (which is great – there is definitely a noted lack of such spots in Buckhead), yet their food is light and fresh enough to seek out for a mid-week lunch. Follow them on Twitter to find out truck locations. Everything is $5 or under AND they accept cash and credit cards.

BBT says: you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t go to here.

Between these guys and Yumbii, I may never have Taco Bell again…

Yumbii in my tummy…

Posted by AllieB on April 12, 2011

Yumbii Far Out Food, parked today at the Prominence Office Building in Buckhead, served up two of the best, most fresh and flavorful tacos I have ever had. The food truck features Asian-Mexican fare, and, while I knew it was going to be good, I didn’t know it’d be that good.

There was no line, and the service was very friendly and fast. I went with pork (per Danielle’s suggestion) and the chicken. Two made a more than adequate lunch – they definitely load on the meat, but because there’s just a sesame salad as topping and no cheese (which even I didn’t miss), it’s not like overwhelming. The chicken, I think, was my favorite of the two, with an Asian flavor akin to kabobs (I love kabobs). The tacos are $2/each – a veritable steal.

I realize how effusive my praise sounds, but I get really excited about tasty food. The website and Twitter page provide frequent updates about location and even line length. For now, their weekly lunch locations are: Buckhead Tuesday and Friday, Atlantic Station on Wednesday; Midtown Mile at Woodruff Arts Plaza (there’s a whole food truck bonanza there on Thursdays).

Yumbii is owned and run by Atlanta native Carson Young, who teamed up with Hankook Taqueria over on Collier Road to bring these delectable lunchtime treats to the streets. The Atlanta Street Food Coalition is working to make permits more readily available to vendors across the city, and I wholeheartedly support their mission.

taken from yumbii.com - I took a picture of my own, which looked exactly like these do, but the lighting in my office didn't do them justice...

Friday: it’s a date. I must acquaint myself with other menu items. I can’t wait for Tex’s Tacos to open – the cheese fries, in particular, caught my eye…food trucks are my new favorite thing.

I am reminded of Led Zep’s classic hit, Ramble On….

Disclaimer: I hope I got my facts right – I sometimes unintentionally take liberties on BBT, so please point out any erroneous details.
