Our country tis of dunce

Posted by AllieB on July 7, 2011

America is 100% the best country in which to live. Watching the fireworks on Monday night, I couldn’t help but be filled with pride, patriotism, and pure love for all things USA. When the crowd around us started cheering during the cacophonous finale, I felt my eyes start to well up a little….God Bless America. In that same vein, America’s Team is dominating – GO BRAVES! (The Braves will always be America’s Team in my book…)

That said, we have our failures. I get that Casey Anthony can’t serve life in jail just because it’s obvious that she’s a murderous Tot Mom – there has to be evidence and blah blah and whatever, you can’t go around putting people in jail based on common sense, but I don’t have to like it.

BBT’s favorite author, Bill Bryson, has detailed a dissimilar yet nevertheless alarming compilation of ways in which America fails – specifically, the failures of its citizens. I share with you below excerpts of an article entitled, “Well, Doctor, I was just trying to lie down…” that I finally found in full text on the internet. (I’ve been goog’ing the damn thing for over a year, and I finally got my search query right because I FOUND IT. It was the best day…)

Here’s a fact for you: According to the latest Statistical Abstract of the United States, every year more than 400,000 Americans suffer injuries involving beds, mattresses, or pillows. Think about that for a minute. That is almost 2,000 bed, mattress, or pillow injuries a day. In the time it takes you to read this article, fourof my fellow citizens will somehow manage to be wounded by their bedding.

Consider this intriguing fact: Almost 50,000 people in the United States are injured each year by pencils, pens, and other desk accessories. How do they do it? I have spent many long hours seated at desks where I would have greeted almost any kind of injury as a welcome diversion, but never once have I come close to achieving actual bodily harm.

So I ask again: How do they do it?… In 1992 (the latest year for which figures are available) more than 400,000 people in the United States were injured by chairs, sofas, and sofa beds. What are we to make of this?… Have we become exceptionally careless sitters? What is certain is that the problem is worsening. The number of chair, sofa, and sofa bed injuries showed an increase of 30,000 over the previous year, which is quite a worrying trend even for those of us who are frankly fearless with regard to soft furnishings. (That may, of course, be the nub of the problem-overconfidence.)

I will never find that not funny…Clearly I’m still on vacation, but I wanted to keep up the momentum.

Two VERY important pieces of information re: BBT’s peeps:

1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MCL!!! I can’t wait to see you in tha A in a couple of weeks. I am tempted to put up the photo of you straggling up the beach in 2k5, but I’m not that mean…nor will I link to your ramen recipe. Instead I’ll just give you an awkward hug via the interweb, and an even more awkward one in person.

2. TINA IS ENGAGED!!!! Oh, happy day. This is my new favorite photo ever, in the history of all photos. LURVE.

Ants in my pantalones

Posted by AllieB on March 21, 2011

The weather forecast for this week is the bomb. There needs to be an immunization for Spring Fever or something, because I have a very hard time functioning when it’s a cloudless 77 degrees outside. And the flowers, they are blooming…! The tulips outside Cathedral of Christ the King on Peachtree are worth a drive/walk by, seriously. Even if you have no mind for flowers, if you like pretty, bright things, like toddlers and I do, then you should check them out.

Worthy of note:

Take this survey and get a free burrito from Willy’s (or your choice of menu item). It takes about 8 – 10 minutes, and it’s worth it.

I just finished Steve Martin’s newest novel, An Object of Beauty. I loved it! Couldn’t put it down. The main character, Lacey, is pretty annoying but nevertheless engaging, and it is also an interesting examination of the art world, both from an artistic and business point of view. There are reproductions of the works that are referenced specifically, and I actually learned a lot – Steve Martin knows a LOT of words. I realize this is hardly an enticing review for the average novel reader, but don’t let it deter you – it’s very easy to read, and there’s plenty of sex, drugs, and scandal (not too much – Mom, you can still handle it), it just happens to have lots of facts, too. Highly recommend.

I want to be this girl. She has a blog, Atlantic Pacific, and it’s awesome (credit: K). She gets dressed in fantastic outfits, her cute boyfriend takes her picture, then she posts the pics on her blog and gets tons of free clothes from designers. Must.Be.Nice. She went to the University of Florida and worked for Gap/Old Navy for awhile, and now I think she’s just a fashion consultant (you can find out a lot about people on LinkedIn…), more or less. What is pretty cool is that she lists where gets all her stuff, and while her YSL bags aren’t so much an option, she gets lot of things from Madewell, Zara, American Apparel, and other reasonable places…she reminds me of Sienna Miller, and I LOVE Sienna Miller.

I just booked a ticket to go visit CKB…! SoFLA, here I come!!!

The future according to BBT

Posted by AllieB on January 19, 2011

Dictating the futures of fictional characters is surprisingly empowering. Earlier today, I read this amazing article which details the lives of every member of the Baby-Sitters Club as adults: The Baby-Sitters Club: Where Are They Now. This is the first line:

Kristy Thomas
Well obviously Kristy is a lesbian.

I enjoyed it so much that I decided to do one for Jessica and Elizabeth of Sweet Valley High

Because karma’s a bitch, Jessica’s ruthless and selfish behavior throughout her youth results in a hard-living adulthood, rendering her weathered and washed-up at the age of 35 with no friends, no man, no job, and living in the makeshift pool house Elizabeth built behind her home. Her best frenemy, Lila, died of an overdose a decade earlier, and Bruce Patman turned out to prefer the company of men and took off for Miami as soon his trust kicked in at age 21.

One day, as  she was clearing out the attic of Elizabeth’s house, Jessica found her old cheerleading uniform. Instantly, Jessica is reminded of her strong will and ability to charm her way into anything she wants. She sets off to right her wrongs, My Name Is Earl-style, and ends up falling in love with one of the nerd boys whose life she made miserable in high school, who had just sold his company to Google for hundreds of millions of dollars. They get married and travel the world in a boutique cruise ship, booking one suite for themselves and another for her 8 dogs, all mutts. At age 94 they die side by side in their sleep. Their fortune is bequeathed to an animal shelter.

Good, ole reliable Elizabeth…she married Todd, they had three kids, live in the same split-level ranch with the pool in the backyard that she grew up in (Mom and Dad died suddenly at age 65 in a freak accident involving a contrived African safari in San Diego and a very cranky rhinoceros) and she still zips around town in a red convertible, allowing her to flaunt her “wild side” every now and again.

But Elizabeth has a secret… unbeknownst to anyone in Sweet Valley, including her best friend Enid (with whom she co-founded the Sweet Valley Knitting Coalition) she also runs a private S&M website accessible only by monthly fee. Meanwhile, her husband, Todd, has developed something of a gambling problem and takes off in the middle of the night for a casino in Minnesota, never to be heard of again…

Unable to cope, Elizabeth immerses herself in her “craft,” totally neglecting her now teen-aged children. Taking charge, Jessica takes a break from her jaunt around the world and ensconces them in elite boarding schools on the East Coast, where they flourish both academically and socially. No one’s real sure what became of Elizabeth…

That was fun. Who else can I do…?

Workin’ on my night cheese

Posted by AllieB on January 19, 2011

I could write a whole post about my Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – which does exist, by the way – but I choose not to. Instead I shall write about Snooki’s new novel, A Shore Thing. Meet Gia and Bella, two girls who are not-so-loosely based on Snooki and JWow, respectively. That’s fine with me – stick with what you know, I always say (credit: NYPost).

* “Gia danced around a little, shaking her peaches for show. She shook it hard. Too hard. In the middle of a shimmy, her stomach cramped. A fart slipped out. A loud one. And stinky.”

* “Gia had never before been in jail. It wasn’t nearly as gritty and disgusting as she’d seen on TV prison shows. The Seaside Heights drunk tank — on a weekday afternoon — was as clean and quiet as a church.”

* “I love food. I love drinking, boys, dancing until my feet swell. I love my family, my friends, my job, my boss. And I love my body, especially the badonk.”

Titillating stuff…maybe I’ll buy it on my Nook for my upcoming trip to Pakistan (more on that later). Also, three songs by The Whigs – with lead singer Parker Gispert, one of my oldest nearest and dearest - were featured thrice on Monday night’s episode of Jersey Shore…I thought “Someone’s Daughter” was particularly apropos.

YKenna has shared with me a new blog devoted to awkwardness: www.umawkward.com.

MASH

This reminds me of Sister and me. Guess who’s who. I bet I could do a whole sub-blog on BBT featuring various categories of Awkward: Encounters with Strangers, Loss of Filter at a Staff Meeting, Babysitting Moments, Attempts to Ascend an Escalator and so on…between my daily blunders and those executed by my peeps, I would really have endless material from which to choose. Hmm. Mayhaps.

Last weekend in Athens, MPvZB, Sis, Leila and I reacquainted ourselves with the wonder that is Liz Lemon. Join us, won’t you?

Did this seem a little meh to you? It did to me. It must be my SAD talking.

Bookshelf Porn

Posted by AllieB on November 1, 2010

I’ve discussed my love for reading and rooms dedicated solely to books. One day I hope to have a personal library of my very own – I think I’d want one of those ladders to cruise around on. I am reminded of my Disney Character alter ego, Belle of Beauty and the Beast – we share a fondness for reading, re-reading, and book ladders…as well as a warm and loving, nonjudgmental heart, of course.

Anyway, this photo blog, Bookshelf Porn, collects images of rooms of books – stores, personal libraries, random bookshelves, and it’s awesome. I guess I should also mention that is stricly G-rated; other apt monikers could be Bookshelf Paradise, Bookshelf Haven, Bookshelf Orgy…just kidding. It’s self-described as being:

“Porn for book lovers. A photoblog collection of all the best bookshelf photos for people who *heart* bookshelves.”

Karl Lagerfield’s is the only celebrity one I’ve stumbled upon yet – it’s…thorough.

I prefer Diane von Furstenberg’s home library, which I share again below. It just emanates serenity. Having a room like this to come home to on a Manic Monday would effectively cancel out any and all mania – before long I might even come to refer to it as Mellow Monday…??

I took the one on left w my cell piece; on right from September 2005 Town & Country

Happy All Saints’ Day, and a very happy birthday to you, Penn Badgley.
