Here are your plans for Saturday night

Posted by AllieB on March 31, 2011

Do you like laughing? Yes. Well, if you live in/around Atlanta and you’re looking to mix it up this Saturday, I suggest you go see one of our nearest and dearest, one Mr. Matt Pyles, make his comedic debut in the  “Improv A**Hole!” show at the Village Theatre Saturday, April 2 at 8:30 p.m.

Here’s what you can expect. I was sold from the start, but they locked it down with “college drinking game.”

The show is our full fledged, home-grown Improv tournament – exercise your inner critic by voting on your favorite actors as they battle the crowd, the bottle, and each other (with torturous consequences)! Think college drinking game, mixed with a live-made-up-on-the-spot comedy show.

Buy tickets here or pay $10 cash at the door. BE ADVISED the show could very easily sell out, in which case you’d be S.O.L…in something of a pickle…etc.

Commtion/Spring Tour - 2009

In addition to improv comedy, Matt also plays in a little band you may have heard of –

it’s called Commotion.

GO BRAVES! Tomahawk Chop.

Racks come in all shapes and sizes

Posted by AllieB on March 30, 2011

Due to this crap weather, I found myself wide awake at the vampire hour of 5AM this morning. Never one to waste even a moment of unexpected free time, I decided to assemble my new over-the-door shoe rack I purchased at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I have the bad habit of hurling my shoes into the back of my closet when I’m done with them, which is good for neither shoe nor ease of locating said shoe, so I decided to get a shoe rack.

Wayne: What is it?
Stacy: It’s a gun rack.
Wayne: A gun rack… a gun rack. I don’t even own A gun, let alone many guns that would necessitate an entire rack. What am I gonna do… with a gun rack?
Stacy: You don’t like it? Fine. You know Wayne, if you’re not careful, you’re going to lose me.
Wayne: I lost you 2 months ago. We broke up. Are you mental?

“Mental” is always a funny way to describe someone…Anyway, I found a reasonably priced rack that declared, “EASY ASSEMBLY!” and “NO TOOLS REQUIRED!” Super, I thought, as I picked up the suspiciously small box. This should have been my first clue.

Step 1: wtf.

:|

Step 2: I persevered nevertheless…

This looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Step 3: Turns out it wasn’t rocket science. Thankfully, these photos do not show the lapse of time between each step…there were some… ‘issues’ between steps dos y tres.

Ta da! Meet & Greet: some of my skis shoes.

It was a very productive way to start my day. My next project is assembling an entertainment center from IKEA. I may or may not document that endeavor…

OMG it’s the season finale of Top Chef tonight!!! If Atlanta’s Richard Blais (of burger joint FLIP – two in ATL and one in B’ham) doesn’t beat that guido Mike, I’m going to be very displeased. And I’ll know exactly who to blame: Gail. Gail is the WORST and my ears bleed every time she starts to talk. Stuff it, Gail.

Claire and I were goog’ing some relevant, important topics on Saturday, including but not limited to: “Jessica Simpson fat.” We stumbled upon this photo, and I felt like it was Christmas, my birthday, and Make Someone Uncomfortable Day all rolled into one glorious happening. Further examination revealed that not only is that a fat suit/costume, but it’s probably not even her….sigh. The heart wants what the heart wants.

21 Questions

Posted by AllieB on March 29, 2011

I often filch my material from other people. Today’s post is no exception.

NYMag has a section called 21 Questions where they ask various people…21 questions. I’m changing the Q’s to match ATL and taking the questionnaire myself – here’s an example of a real one with Sarah Hyland (Hayley from Modern Family). This is me being honest.

Name: Allie

Age: 19 years older than an 8 year old

Neighborhood: Buckhead

Occupation: Nonprofit Development with a side of online media consulting and a focus on blogging. I’ve got all kinds of balls in the air

Who’s your favorite Atlantan, living or dead, real or fictional? Ludacris or Margaret Mitchell

What’s the best meal you’ve eaten in Atlanta? This is a very difficult question. Floataway Cafe by Emory is definitely amongst the best meals I’ve ever had, but so is the Mr C’s Philly Cheesesteak. I’m an equal opportunity indulger.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job? I juggle the aforementioned balls.

What’s the last thing you saw at The Georgia Dome? No one ever takes me to Falcons games…the last thing I saw at The Georgia Dome was the Monster Truck Rally. We wore fake teeth, cut off denim, some of us wore Aerosmith message tees (moi), brought in our own funnel and sat in Warrick Dunne’s box. It was one of my most fun times.

What’s your favorite medication? Airborne

What’s hanging above your sofa? Pictures of my trip to Greece with Nancy.

Who is your mortal enemy? Hilary. And birds – I hate birds.

When’s the last time you drove a car? I drove this morning to work – it takes 2.5 minutes

How has the Recession affected you? Back in 2009 my job gave me a raise and then took it away two paychecks later. That sucked.

What makes someone an Atlantan? Innate knowledge of back roads…the ability to get out of town, heading South, without getting on the Connector…running the Peachtree Road Race at least once…attending Braves games at The Atlanta Fulton County Stadium…riding The Pink Pig at Macy’s Downtown…spending an evening in the OK Cafe parking lot.

THE END. I deleted like half of the Q’s – that was the most godforsaken boring survey I’ve ever taken, and I have taken a LOT surveys. Besides, now all I can think about is how much I want to go back to Greece…

Paradise Beach, Mykonos

Seriously, wtf is this weather – it’s almost April. If I wanted it to be cold and dreary at the end of March I’d move to BUFFALO FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. The Super Paradise is looking more appealing than ever right now…Yacht Week in Greece, anyone? Bueller? Tyler Perry?

Do ugly people know they’re ugly?

The quiet ones do.*

BOOM. I had a nice weekend – fairly standard with a side of really fun. I hung out with my peeps, ran a few errands, did a little cleaning, some dart throwing, a LOT of laughing…I also managed to hang on to both my first and last names (‘Allie’ & ‘Baxter’), which is more than I can say for this celebrity kook:

Diddy did it. So did Madonna and Prince, and now you can add Lindsay Lohan to the list of celebrities who are opting for a single moniker, with the troubled star’s mom, Dina, confirming to me that Lindsay plans to remove “Lohan” from her official name. “So many of the greatest people in showbiz are known by just their first name. Look at Oprah and Beyonce. Now you can add Lindsay to that list…” (source: Popeater.com)

[Sigh of defeat] Well, I guess we can all just be relieved that she’s finally been able to pinpoint the source of her struggles: the two syllables of her last name. Problem: solved! This is some solid science, Lindsay Lohan – some very solid science.

I did a good bit of shopping on Saturday, and I had a few observations which I will share with you now:

  • don’t go shopping on Saturday
  • choose a day besides Saturday to do your shopping
  • Monday – Friday and Sunday are your best days for shopping

Le mis. However, I was able to ascertain that I want everything that every store is selling right now. I did some buying, but I still need all of these things (Miriam, this is not an invitation to go out and purchase the whole lot. AHEM Christmas Wishlist.)

  1. Free Dance Top – Anthropologie (that’s what they call it, to me it is a ‘fun shirt’)
  2. Nude Pump – Pour la Victoire
  3. White Flare Jeans – J Brand
  4. Blouse, Shorts, and Belt – J. Crew
  5. Leather Carryall – American Apparel (copying Atlantic-Pacific – my obsession grows daily)
  6. Turquoise Necklace – Kenneth Jay Lane

I wonder why I have such an aversion to color… Sidebar: is anyone else totally fed up with the red haired shopbop model!? I’ve had beef with her since ’06 and it really irks me that she’s still around, like, get another job or something. She’s so…smug.

Oh ok, sure. Yeah, no – that makes sense

Posted by AllieB on March 25, 2011

Snoop! Snoop-a-loop! Snoop had a show in Athens last night, and, according MPvZB’s co-worker who runs the sound at 40Watt, he requested that the Green Room be stocked with the following items:

  1. bucket of chicken
  2. bag of weed
  3. skittles

I love Snoop. So, I guess I talk about Kate Middleton a lot or something, because people keep sending me random ass crap that has to do with The Royal Wedding. I mean, like I really care…it’s not like I’m taking her picture with me when I get my haircut this afternoon.

Anyway, here is some Will&Kate swag that you can buy. It concerns me that even one human might purchase the refrigerator wrapping. The tea bags creep me out tremendously, as does the doll – really, none of this is okay.

I am not a basketball fan, at all whatsoever, but I will be watching the Richmond Spiders take on the Kansas Whatevers tonight…and if I miss it, I can just check my mom’s tweets on The Twitter. I bet their surprise success is throwing off all kinds of brackets…go SPIDERS!

the resemblance - it's uncanny
